I’m Sorry, But I Need To Remove Your Thyroid

By Bill Kray

Why might a doctor perform a thyroidectomy?

He doesn't want to do it. In fact, it's a last resort. But such a severe recommendation may stem from thyroid cancer, noncancerous thyroid enlargement (goiter), or overactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

The thyroid helps regulate metabolism by controlling various endocrine system glands. An underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can manifest the following symptoms:

  • Pervasive fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Difficulty with learning
  • Dry, brittle hair and nails
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • Puffy face
  • Constipation
  • Sore muscles
  • Weight gain and fluid retention
  • Heavy and/or irregular menstrual flow
  • Increased frequency of miscarriages
  • Increased sensitivity to many medication

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. Hormone doctors (endocrinologists) do their part to support this by educating patients about the symptoms and risks as well as performing appropriate examinations.
